Bad lighting is hard to ignore. Have you ever been to a restaurant where the “mood lighting” was so dark you could barely see the person sitting across from you? Or walked under the fluorescent bulbs of a parking garage and noticed a green glow to your skin? It’s unmistakeable when you see it.

Good lighting, on the other hand, is easily overlooked. When designing a space, most homeowners focus on structural elements and the decor — proper lighting is often forgotten about. For tips on how to choose the best lighting fixtures, we turned to HGTV designer Melissa Davis. She brought us to Royal Lighting in Toronto to show us how it’s done.
